Not enough good art in Orlando? That’s because you’re too busy sitting on your big fat literate ass reading this article instead of going and looking for it. Why just last week local college student and artist Jonathan Scarborough had a five-day installation series in the second floor gallery of the VAB at UCF. “Five Easy Pieces” featured a different installation each day for five days and revolved around the theme of simple and easy. He started the thang by filling the small, square, white room with a variety of bouncy balls. Calling the piece “Flood,” he encouraged those in the fray to kick the balls around the room ensuring good times for all. Tuesday brought “Forest” in which the entire ceiling was covered in hanging pine tree air fresheners of many different races and creeds. The odor was quite overwhelming (PS: personal favorite). Wednesday’s piece was untitled and was nothing more than a double sided, color-changing night light. The second to last day (aka Thursday) involved a small, square, white (deja vu) canvas in the middle of the room and various types of gum scattered about the floor and was dubbed “The Making of Sticky Sculpture # 1.” The wall read: “Please chew gum and stick to pedestal before exiting. Discard wrappers on gallery floor.” And so we did. Finally, Friday gave us the glorious “Stir Crazy”: an entire wall covered in bubble wrap which we proceeded to pop with our fists, feet, and bodies which were all thrust into the wall. Verdict: Pretty fuckin’ cool. So the next time you think there ain’t any art in Orlando, try going to an art gallery; I hear they got a lot of that shit inside ‘em. Story by Matt Harrison
