Diplo Does Firestone

Standing in line outside of Firestone, waiting to get into Diplo's only Florida performance on his current tour, my wandering eye scoped a sweet Justice "Waters of Nazareth" t-shirt walking my way. As it passed I did a doubletake at the wearer. Was that - "That's Diplo!" wispered the woman walking behind him. "I'm his mom!"

By booking Diplo, Firestone's Saturday/Thursday proved the sincerity of their ambition to become Orlando's new number one dance night. After his work with hipster heart-throb M.I.A. and his introduction of baile funk into the United States club scene, Diplo has quickly become the hottest DJ of the new millenium.

Bonde do Role, recently signed to Diplo's own Mad Decent label, were slated to open for the dude, but unfortunately an injury prevented their performance, which surely would have been the first ever baile funk show in Orlando. The crowd still came out for Diplodocus, however, and The Loft was packed by the time he took the tables. Known for perfecting the art of the mashup, Diplo delivered banger after banger, mixing them together where he pleased to create an atmosphere of raw party. Classic diplo fodder, including 80s favorites like The Cure, mingled with today's hottest shit, like Kelis' "Bossy" beat. He even surprised the crowd with occasional Florida-themed revelations like, "I used to work at Subway on Colonial... I stole mad shit though!", and "I dropped out of UCF".

The crowd went respectively crazy all night long, dancing on top of cushioned seats, knocking over bottles of vodka and even break dancing. With drink specials flowing and bangers bangin', the chemistry was right for one of the wildest parties KillerPOP's ever seen in Orlando.

For only doing one show in the state he named his only true solo album after, Diplo delivered the goods. The music was more than decent, and he kept it rocking past 2:30 in the morning. It's about damn time we had that kind of show in Orlando.
