KillerPOP Gets Famous with Aaron
With a name like FAMOUS AARON and a myspace quote of "competing with the sun for center of the universe", you know Aaron's got a bit of an ego thing. But you know what? His art's fresh and he's doing his thing in the Orlando area, so we thought to hit him up for some thoughts. Here's what he had to say: Okay, Famous Aaron: why "Famous Aaron?" Well, first off... it's "FAMOUS AARON." I simply threw the word "Famous" in front of my real name just because you know what? I AM famous. Everywhere you go, even if you don't know it... you are viewing my work. Anybody who's been around Orlando (Winter Park especially) has seen your handywork, even if they don't realize it. Can you tell us any stories behind those little silver star dudes? I started tagging them when I went to the San Francisco Art Institute and I was hanging around with GREY (PVC) alot, and I was tagging them EVERYWHERE. I mean, EVERYWHERE! Anyway, after a while I eventually got called into the security office and they had a stack of polaroids of my characters tagged in various spots around the school and I completely denied any involvement. After that, I would hear people on the bus and places I went talking about the starfish, saying stuff like, "What the hell are these?" and "Man, have you seen all those funny cute little stars tagged everywhere?" That kinda stuff messes with your brain, and forces you to want to do more. At one point I was doing thousands of them every night just to piss people off. You've also got plenty of works on canvas, but I hear you've cancelled your upcoming gallery show to focus on other projects. Tell us a little about the newspaper comic strip you're working on: All I will say is, have your readers write and email the Orlando Weekly and tell them to print, "NORMAN." Basically, I'm working on getting my comic strip internationally syndicated. And you're designing graphics for skateboards as well. How did you get into that, and where could one find your decks? I've skateboarded my whole life, and have had friends who are professional skateboarders and friends who own skateshops, so jumping into doing graphics was a natural progression. You can see (and purchase) my very limited edition board at: www.nullskateboards.com (It's the GOMBAR deck for those of you who are two retarded to figure that out. If you buy one, tell them that FAMOUS AARON sent you. Aside from those projects, you mentioned a book/screenplay for a film? Can you give us an idea of the story? Lets just say picture a mixture of Requiem for A Dream, KIDS, BOMB THE SYSTEM, and Then you'll have an idea of what we're going for on this one. It's a true story based on the last 3 years of my life. Your style involves a lot of bold, solid colors, and crisp, defining black lines, with an emphasis on character. What kinds of art and artists influenced your style? Way too many to list. I get inpiration from anything involved in life. I look around and stare at blank walls sometimes and end up becoming inspired. You've got a lot on your plate right now, but what do you think is next for Famous Aaron? I'm seriously going to become a household name. So, I'll leave you with that, but I'm going to be doing some modeling work and some acting work, but my art is first and foremost. STAY GOLD AND HARD TO HOLD, FAMOUS AARON. interview by Jack Cusumano
